From harvesting ripe veggies in our resident garden to meeting friends at the Polo Lounge & Grille for an SEC football watch party, our campus is pulsing with folks enjoying a life free from distractions like yard work and household chores.

But the fall fun doesn’t stop at the gates of our 29-acre senior living community. The Village sits just a short drive from the heart of Germantown, a picture-perfect southern city that bursts with color and charm come fall. Here are some senior-friendly ways to experience autumn in Germantown—and yes, our retirement community provides transportation to many of these events.

Explore the Germantown Festival with Your Friends or Grandkids

When September rolls around, the Germantown Civic Club on Poplar Pike hosts its Annual Germantown Festival, one of the area’s longest-running street fairs. This free, fun weekend boasts plenty of senior-friendly fall activities, including the best in live entertainment, shopping, tasty foods and more.

As you stroll through acres of attractions, you’ll find nearly 400 local and regional artists and craftspeople displaying unique wares like jewelry, pottery, woodwork, hand-stitched garments, photographs and paintings. When hunger hits, you’ll have your pick of mouth-watering delights, from corn dogs and funnel cakes to catfish, brats and BBQ.

Got grandkids? Grab your cell phone and prepare to take dozens of pictures as the youngsters tackle activities like rock climbing, inflatable moonwalks and kiddie rides. Plus, children of all ages will enjoy the clowns wandering the park offering balloon animals and face painting.

And if you’ve never seen the annual Running of the Weenies, you’re in for a treat. This entertaining dachshund race, presented by the Germantown Animal Shelter, supports a worthy cause and is always good for laughs. Owners can also enter their dachshunds in the Best Dressed Hot Dog Contest, which is truly something to bark about.

Let Your Imagination Soar at the Collierville Hot Air Balloon Festival

The pristine September skies above the Germantown, TN area are gorgeous on their own, but when they’re filled with a kaleidoscope of hot air balloons, the sight is nothing less than spectacular.

Every fall, the Collierville Balloon Festival brings together more than 20 hot air balloons in all colors and shapes—even a cartoon character or two. The day begins with a breathtaking ascent of participating balloons (you’ll definitely want to bring your camera.) And after the sun sets, pull up a lawn chair and watch the balloons ascend once more, this time bathed in a magnificent light show that rivals any fireworks display.

There’s also plenty of live entertainment, arts and crafts vendors and food to round out the senior-friendly fun. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can enjoy a birds-eye view of the Germantown area by booking your own tethered or untethered flight. Up, up and away!

Rev Up Your Weekend with the Germantown Cars & Coffee Auto Show

Calling all fans of roadsters, hot rods and antiques! Every fourth Saturday, Cars & Coffee rolls into the Germantown Performing Arts Center parking lot with the promise of unique, exotic and vintage cars you’re not likely to encounter anywhere else.

Cars & Coffee is part of a global celebration of automotive passion where like-minded enthusiasts gather to showcase their prized possessions and share stories, experiences and the joy of driving. And while it isn’t exclusive to fall, the atmosphere is particularly lively in the fresh autumn air as the aroma of coffee blends with the scent of high-octane fuel.

The sun will be shining, the engines will be roaring and the coffee will be brewing as folks bond over makes, models, tires, transmissions and other topics car lovers like to discuss. You might even spot a few staff members at The Village at Germantown retirement community displaying their one-of-a-kind rides. Insider tip: Arrive early.

Take in a Show at the Germantown Performing Arts Center

Less than a mile from The Village at Germantown stands a true cultural treasure: the Germantown Performing Arts Center (GPAC). The legendary Ray Charles performed the first concert there in 1994, setting a high bar of excellence that continues to this day.

Season after season, GPAC welcomes an array of artists with extraordinary talents representing diverse music, theater and dance forms. Its indoor main stage theater is an acoustically perfect 854-seat venue where world-renowned artists captivate audiences of all ages.

Outdoors, the GPAC Grove provides a scenic backdrop for plays, happy hours and community concerts, many geared toward seniors. And if you look closely, you might see some talented, active seniors from The Village at Germantown performing in Iris orchestra concerts or community theatre productions.

One must-do music show among Germantown seniors is Jazz in the Box, which lets you experience new and established artists in an intimate cabaret-style atmosphere. This fall’s lineup includes names like woodwinds master Ken Peplowski and Grammy-nominated vocalist Tierney Sutton, who are sure to turn up the heat as the nights grow cooler.
